Archived broadcasts and highlights deleted as a precaution.
The official Twitch accounts for PlayStation, Xbox
and the eSport League were compromised during Gamescom 2014, resulting
in highlights from broadcasts posted to the channels with offensive or
misleading content.
Highlights were posted on the respective channels with headlines and descriptions that contained cursive, racist and homophobic language, along with insults directed at the companies over the recent announcement that Rise of the Tomb Raider was a timed Xbox exclusive.
Twitch believes that the vandals gained access to the official channels
by using unattended machines at Gamescom that were logged into the
accounts. All archived videos on demand and highlights from the affected
accounts have been temporarily removed.
“Since these are all companies at Gamescom, we believe it is somebody
who has gained access to logged-in computers at the venue,” a Twitch
spokesperson told us in an email. “As a precautionary measure, we
temporarily removed highlights and past broadcasts for those channels
since it's in the early hours of the morning in Cologne.”
Archived broadcasts and highlights are still not available
to view on either accounts at the time of writing. Twitch adds that “it
appears to have been a very isolated incident” since no other attacks
have been reported on since.
